Fools Make The Rules EP

We're assembling a stopgap EP to get things going promotionally for the next full-length record. It'll be called Fools Make The Rules and have the titular song, "Miss Me Baby", band versions of "Phone Went Dead" and "Searching Drifter", and a long instrumental called "Fix Your Airport". It'll be out Jan 1. We're playing a show at the Retired Records house in Hamilton on Jan 6, opening for the Happy Endings (Ian Blurton's new band). Thanks to Mark for hooking that one up. Stoked.

News

Hey ya folks. We will be doing stacks and stacks of recording over the Winter Break, but again, my newfound patience has pushed the release date back. We won't have an LP out this year. It will be out in late Feb or early March, just in time to make it the soundtrack to your spring AND summer. In the meantime, we will be stockpiling songs so that only the best are put out. Still trying to figure out whether it'll be called Yawns Beyond or Dancing Days.

No shows coming up but something might pop up, maybe a New Year's Eve gig or whatever. Who knows. If not, we got stuff coming in the new year. For the rest of 2011 I will be focusing on the Sleep For The Nightlife stuff, with an eye toward maybe also finally completing the GIANTS record.

And, last but not least, like every December, you can download our Christmas song here: http://thebigcitynightsband.bandcamp.com/album/be-mine-this-xmas

Day Divisions

Just assembled a new EP called Day Divisions.

Running Time: 5:44
01. Sailing To Denver
02. Phone Went Dead
03. Ferris Wheel

It's trio of extremely lo-fi dirges recorded on a particularly ramshackle set-up. That muddled guitar lick at the very end of "Ferris Wheel" is lifted from "Happy When It Rains" by The Jesus and Mary Chain. Given the song's clipping nature, I feel it was an OK choice. Sonically and lyrically they all seem to play in the same field, so here she is: http://soundcloud.com/bicycle-man/sets/day-divisions-1

Indie Radio

I must have missed this. Here's an old podcast from the indie machine that includes our song "Lost Polaroids" from Gimme Gardens: http://www.theindiemachine.com/2011/08/01/setlist-2011-07-31-indie-love-radio/

Yawns Beyond

Haven't done much recording since I last checked in, but things will be happening soon. The snowball is tottering at the top of the mountain. Yes, indeed. I've been really busy with school and Sudbury '96 and working weekends at the damn grocery store, but I have kept my backburner baby The Big City Nights in mind. Soooooo the next record isn't called Dancing Days anymore, though I'll keep that one in mind for the future. The thing's gonna be called Yawns Beyond. I've been finalizing lyrics and such and we should begin recording the other half of the record (for you see, it's half done) after Nov 12th, which is the screening date for Sudbury '96. Here's the event page: https://www.facebook.com/#!/event.php?eid=164243430328613
In other news my other band GIANTS is playing Einstein's tomorrow night, or tonight, I guess. Event page is here: https://www.facebook.com/#!/event.php?eid=247571925292835 GIANTS have also finally got around to recording drum tracks for our debut EP Bob Marley Was A Hate Monger so that should be out by the end of the year. 6 songs on there.
We have a show on my birthday this year. That's the first time that's ever happened (that I can remember). We're playing my old hometown haunt - Tracks in Brampton. Yes indeed. You should come. Between now and then I expect to plow through some of the new songs, though I highly doubt the new record will be ready for the show.

Fall is here. Don't let your heart sink.

Working away

Finished "Fools Make The Rules" over the weekend. Ryan added bass and harmonies and we added gang vox to the end. It'll be going on Dancing Days. Here's the final version: http://soundcloud.com/bicycle-man/fools-make-the-rules-2

Wrote and recorded this today: http://soundcloud.com/bicycle-man/exhalation
Also, I'm sick and wrote an instrumental about it. It'll probably end up on Yawns Beyond. This is the fist-pumping anthem that the germs are taking over to: http://soundcloud.com/bicycle-man/germ-triumph

More to come, I think we're tracking some new stuff on Sunday. Also playing acoustic this Saturday @ Creature's Creating, a new gallery on Queen. Here's the event: https://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=233792593335262

Happy Labour Day

He used the American spelling, but this peice articulates some of the vague suspicions I've had for a few years now but haven't been able to articulate because I was too busy working: http://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/the-last-labor-day/2011/09/04/gIQA11Ob2J_story.html

Played a decent show at the Dollar last Saturday. Good job boys.

I am situated in a new place where creativity seems to bounce off the walls. I'm working on a mixtape at the moment, a mixtape in the hip hop sense of the format - a bunch of songs, song ideas, instrumentals, covers, and remixes that will precede the next major release, Dancing Days. I think it will work both as a stopgap release to satisfy the roar of my clamouring fans - or, more accurately, the roar rising at me from the void telling me to make things, songs chief among them. There are ten songs finished for this tape, and there will be more to come. In all likelihood this mixtape will be finished before the Hosehead release, so look out for it. When it's done, you'll be the first to know. Or I guess I'll be the first to know because I decide when it's done. I think it'll be called Roll From The Hole That Holds You.

This is also happening in a few weeks: https://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=246057538763688

Some new shows and a compilation

I've added a few shows to the shows section but I'll post them here too because, really, why not?

September 1st @ Clinton's, Toronto (solo show)
September 3rd @ Silver Dollar, Toronto
September 6 @ Plan B Cafe, Toronto (solo show)
September 11th @ Sneaky Dee's, Toronto

Recording is still slated to begin in September. Still working out what songs we want to do, but the stockpile is growing. As ever, my idea of this record as a lean, 12-track affair has ballooned into one of our typical eighteen-songers, but I will do my best to be vigilant and self-edit. As ever, I want this to be our best record yet. Patience, my puppies. Particularly those of you in Palgrave, ON.
In other news, a song that will appear on the new record, Mini Mansions , will appear on an upcoming Retired Records compilation. Retired Records is a label run by some guys I know in Hamilton. I am happy that they thought of us.

Lose yer blues, that's the news.

A shit-ton of hyperlinks means lots of news!

Two songs are finished for the next record but they've been finished for over a month. We haven't done anything else recording-wise since then, but we did demo a 16-minute song a few weeks ago. The next record is still called Dancing Days but recording won't begin for a little while yet because I've been way too absorbed in the production of a feature-length film, Sudbury '96, which features acting from both Ryan and myself, as well as a spoken-word cameo from James. It's going to be a mix between F.U.B.A.R. and Hardcore Logo with just a dash and a pinch of originality.
In other news my main band Sleep For The Nightlife have finished tracking our second EP, our follow-up to 2009's Human People, and mixing has begun. It's tentatively titled Minimalist Cities and it should be out in the fall.
In more news I've been playing bass in my friends Brent and Spencers' Fidelity Friends and should be playing a CD release show for their record sometime this year.
In more news we will be filming two or three videos next month for new and old songs of ours. I'm hoping to give "Come Back 2 Me" and "Memory Motel" the HD video treatment, and maybe something for "That Evil Beat" if there's time. All with a summer vibe - the only vibe worth having.
In even more news I've been writing a lot of stuff lately and I'm fairly certain we will get another two records out by years end.
In even more news I'll be playing a solo electric show @ The Elmocambo next Wednesday Aug 10 with my friend Jared Both's (ex-Barn Owl) new band and The Elwins (with whom we've recently played).

That's the news, lose yer blues

Hosehead Records

Hi reader.

Made a handshake deal with Hosehead Records prez Mike last night, and it was agreed that they will be releasing our next release on cassette. Little Ghost Recording Co. will do the CDs still. With amazing bands like First Base and Sonic Avenues on the roster, I can say I'm excited and proud. (This isn't insincerity, the First Base song "I'll Be Your Hangover" is one of my favourite pop songs of all time.) We start recording the next record this month. It will be called Dancing Days.

 Either that or Fuck Zeppelin.

Dancing Days

I've been very busy this summer with creative stuff, which is good for me.
We've been working on Sudbury '96 for about three weeks now and things are progressing well. It's going to take us all summer to shoot the thing and most of autumn to edit, so I imagine it won't be done for a while, but such a long-term project has instilled in me a bit of patience. Same thing with the oft-delayed tracking of the GIANTS record, which I think was supposed to start in March. We haven't tracked a single floor tom hit. That's okay though. It will happen. This patience has bled over into my attitude concerning The Big City Nights next record. I think we're going to just take all summer to record here and there in different places and on different formats and then put it out in August or so. I have a lot of material but no solid songs really written. I think that "Minimansions" will probably be on the next LP but aside from that, I really don't know anything except for the title, which will be Dancing Days.
We play the Tiger Bar tomorrow which should be fun. I imagine we'll record some new songs sometime in July.

Highlights include the rollicking "Minimansions" and the tearful "Baskets".

Fidelity Friends, GIANTS, and BCN news

Two of my buddies (and occasional members of The Big City Nights Band) Brent and Spencer have a new band called Fidelity Friends and their new record titled Twenty-Fifth and Nowhere is available for free download right here: http://fidelityfriends.bandcamp.com/
Highlights include the Rusty-esque "Intentional Accident", the muscular and insane "Cock Fight", and the country-ish strummer "Those Empty Days". The whole thing is great though and you should get it immediately. I mean it. Go do it now. I co-sang "Sunshine Pie", and "Party Riff" is part of GIANTS' live set.
Speaking of GIANTS, we're playing a show with Crop Failure, CESSNA, and some other band this Friday at Mark's house in Hamilton. I don't know the address though so I suppose it's pointless to tell you this. For show listings for all of my bands as well as a handy guide to all LGRC releases, go here: http://www.littleghostrecordingco.blogspot.com/
I wrote nine new songs today and we're making a new record the weekend of June 3rd, either up north at a friends' cottage or in Brampton. We'll have to wait and see. This one will be a mathier, rockier, more punishing affair than anything we've done before, and should hopefully get us onto radio stations nationwide, or at least a few shows here and there. The working title for this one is Hockey Tits. Yeah I know.
That's the news for now. You're coming to see us play this Saturday night at the Silver Dollar right? RIGHT!? Here's the facebook event page: http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=224428200904589

Mercy Among The Children

The new record is done and you can download it for free right here: http://thebigcitynightsband.bandcamp.com/album/mercy-among-the-children

16 songs in under 30 mins, 3 covers (The Jiants, Longwave, and The Rolling Stones). No real drums at all, lots of book hitting and door slamming, though. Summertime music.

Played a cool show @ The Gladstone last night (forgot to mention that one), but none booked for the moment. Cheers.

Spaghetti Songs

It's not the new record, but an EP of old b-sides and funny out takes that don't really fit on the new record. It has eight "songs', including the legendary "Overhead Mic Falls On James" and "Rookie Organ Nite @ The Leaf Game". I'm still working on the new full-length, and with these tunes off of it, it's shaping up to be a killer beach-y summer album.

You can download Spaghetti Songs here: http://soundcloud.com/bicycle-man/sets/spaghetti-songs-2

01. Be Careful With Me
02. Overhead Mic Falls On James (from 2006)
03. 1985
04. Until They Smile
05. Rookie Organ Nite @ The Leaf Game
06. Don't Count Yr Pennies On Xmas (from 2007)
07. Food
08. Karth Prooks (feat James' first ever BCN guitar solo)

Working away...hiding away

As ever, we have a new record coming out soon. Initially it was supposed to be mostly b-sides with a few acoustic strums thrown in for good measure, but it's now grown into something bigger, weirder, and cooler. Been fucking around with a loop pedal for some songs, a killer cover of the Stones' "Out of Time" with Jamie, that tune with Mark from Crop Failure, and some other goodies. I hope to get Russell and Dave out for a few songs, and maybe Hacker too.
The record will be out in may, only on cassette but w/ a download code. As before, it's called Mercy Among The Children.

 Yahhh

So many songs

It's no secret that The Big City Nights Band have lots and lots of songs. Some have said to me that I don't self edit enough, but I don't really think that's true. For our first record, I recorded at least 30 songs over a year and a half, and only 17 made it to the final tracklist. For A Steamroller Named Desire, again, I had over 30 songs and only 14 made it. On our third record I made a bit of a mistake and put absolutely everything on there, 26 tracks, which resulted in our sloppiest record by far. For the next one we swung back completely the other way and put 12 songs on Carry Me Ontario, which is our leanest record yet. I judiciously edited each record except for Complete Lung Champions and Gimme Gardens, for better or worse. My least favourite of our record is without a doubt Under The Overpass. It was done far too quickly (but not in the usual good way) and I was really fucked up at the time. I really like the first four songs a lot, but everything else is just EP material. I like the new one a lot, but I'm sure over time it'll fade a bit too.
It's definitely not as exciting as it used to be, although, paradoxically, I feel way more compelled to write songs now then I did in 2007. With that first record I used to toss and turn all night considering different tracklistings and guitar tones and lyrics. When it was finally finished I listened to it everyday for months. I loved it. The same goes for the second record. I was (and still am) immensely proud of that thing. These days the thrill doesn't last as long. I guess that's because we make new music so frequently.
Annnyway I'm just thinking out loud. I do think we'll do another record this summer, the breezy Dancing Days, but I think I'm running out of decent song ideas, or retreading old ground with less enthusiasm. I'm like a jaded washed-up rock star without the money or fans.
I've been thinking more and more about ending the band lately, either as a way of getting on with things and maybe starting a band that really makes a go of it, or as a dramatic way of getting people to shell out cash for a Best Of, which I've already been thinking about. I'd arrange it chronologically because I always liked compilations better that way; you can hear the growth or decay. Because I'm putting off writing an essay, here's the tracklisting as it would stand today:

 01 Bicycle Man
 02 Wedding Day
 03 Mathematics
 04 Let's Go To Hell
 05 Horseshoes
 06 Night Needles
 07 Champs
 08 Reena
 09 Skeleton Man
 10 That Evil Beat
 11 Happy Man
 12 Memory Motel
13 If Cold Is Coming, Football!
 14 Vegetable Bros
 15 Rainy River, ON
 16 Beach Music
 17 Lump In My Throat
 18 Like A Song
 19 As Near As Now
 20 Under The Overpass
 21 Lasagna Sunrise
 22 Ever Say Ever
 23 Come Back 2 Me
24 Keyboard Nights (Me On The Way)
 25 Hey Thirsty!

Exile On Queen St

She's done, folks: http://thebigcitynightsband.bandcamp.com/album/exile-on-queen-st

The release show is April 30th @ The Drake Underground w/ The Flying Museum Band.  Up next is a four or five song EP of B-sides from the Exile sessions and also last year, as well as two or three new songs. That EP is called Spaghetti Songs. After that my other band GIANTS are making a record, but that should be painless and easy considering that we all have recording gear, so once the drums are done we can all work on it at our various domiciles. I've already started writing for the next Big City Nights full length record which we're going to record at a cottage up north this summer. The working title for that record is Dancing Days. Once school ends my chief project will be the film Russell and I are working on, Sudbury '96.

Inching closer plus shows

The record is very close. Feeling lethargic with this one at the moment. Tracking is done, so I just have to mix. For some reason I enjoy that least (not that I don't enjoy it). The most fun thing ever is just endlessly doing guitar overdubs. I can't decide whether to leave the record as is or add a shit load of trombone and keyboard...maybe I'll do both and then ask people their opinions. That sounds like a good idea, but I probably won't do it. Adding all that stuff is fun and it works, but it kinda takes away from the vibe, and this one was a definite party record. Strange though, something about the party felt sad and rushed. Maybe it's because we're all approaching thirty and can't "go" like we used to. Or maybe it's the fact that we still "go" like we used to and we're almost thirty. Or maybe because I was drunker than everyone else and keep frantically leap-frogging from person to person, chatting but not really connecting. One of the three. I'm currently fighting an encroaching virus because I drink too much on weekends (and sometimes weekdays) and listening to this "chillwave" stuff everyone's been talking about. I dig it. School-wise, I have the most difficult month of my life coming up, so it would probably be best for my sleeping patterns and stomach if I finish mixing the last song "Millions", remix the two songs that need a bit of tweaking, and send them off to Mills to get mastered.

Looks like there will be thirteen or fifteen songs on the record with a few jokes tossed in at the end.

Soon, my babes. This month hopefully, and April at the very very latest.

Release show is April 30 @ The Drake Underground w/ The Flying Museum Band

My other band GIANTS is playing @ Siesta Nouveaux this Saturday w/ Animal Faces, who are amazing.

The Flower City 3 are playing a house show at my house on April Fool's Day (no foolin).

Sleep For The Nightlife are back in two weeks. Get ready.

My first scathing review

Here's a mean one, from iheartmusic.net: http://www.iheartmusic.net/serendipity/index.php?url=archives/2145-Wilting-Flower-City.html&serendipity[csuccess]=true

Brampton Comes Alive isn't the worst album I've ever heard.

I realize that's not exactly a ringing endorsement of
The Flower City 3's debut. That I can write that, however, actually comes as a bit of a shock to me, since, for its first half, the album was sounding like a pretty strong contender for that title. For it to avoid that dubious honour and attain a level of...average-ness speaks to both a surprisingly decent second half, not to mention how, after repeated listens, the beginning of the album actually starts to sound endearing in its awfulness.

Of course, that could just be the musical equivalent of Stockholm Syndrome kicking in. Because make no mistake, the first half of Brampton Comes Alive is pretty awful. Painfully off-key vocals, even more off-key melodies, bizarre timing, production that makes it sound as though the album was recorded at a distance from the bottom of a well -- all those things are present on tracks like "All In The Bramalea" and "
Wooden Parts", and they collectively make you wonder whether you might be in the presence of an album that never should've seen the light of day.

And then, magically, everything seems to come together around the midpoint of the album. While the band may not improve much on songs like "
How I Came" and "Starting Over Again", they still get better, to the point you can see what they're going for. Specifically, you can tell (I think) that they're going for a lo-fi, Pavement-y kind of aesthetic -- and even if they're clearly not in the same league as Pavement, they've at least improved sufficiently over that horrid first half that you think that maybe, just maybe, the band might be worth listening to one day. As for the present...well, I think I'll wait until that one day comes. (Though the fact the album is currently available on a PWYC basis means you don't need to take my word for that!)

 Ouch.

Lonnnng Weekend

Recovering from an unusual amount of debauchery committed this past weekend. I can't believe how much we got done considering the alcohol abuse. I'm not bragging. It was stupid. I'll probably be hungover until April. In other news, the record's well on it's way to being finished, I'd say it's 85% completed.
About fourteen songs are finished and just need better mixes. There's not much tracking left to do. If you're interested, you can hear a bunch of rough mixes here: http://soundcloud.com/bicycle-man
Most of the songs on that page will be on the upcoming record, which is still called Exile On Queen St.
Soon enough, my friends, soon enough.
Although this would sound odd coming from any other band, this will very likely be our only full-length record this year. There will be an EP of b-sides (including the legendary cuts "Rookie Organ Nite @ The Leaf Game" and "Overhead Mic Falls On James"), but I don't think another full-length this year. 2010 kinda burnt us out, and I have a shitload of other projects this year (The Flower City 3, GIANTS, and Sleep For The Nightlife).

I've been sleeping through the daylight.
I miss those guys.
I miss a lot of things.
Remember that album title All Of A Sudden I Miss Everyone?
Gorgeous. I never got around to listening to it though.

I'm tired.

"Goodnight always, to all that's pure that's in your heart"

Brampton Guardian interview/story on the FC3

My other band with Russell got a nod in our hometown paper. It feels good. That article is here: http://www.bramptonguardian.com/what's%20on/article/959915--band-has-brampton-in-mind

Serious recording for Exile On Queen St all weekend, starting tomorrow.

An interview, a couple of shows and a new record

Here's an interview done w/ Paulina on Gold Soundz:
http://goldsoundzblog.com/?p=2319

Some upcoming shows:

February 24 @ Tiger Bar, Toronto
March 12 @ Tracks, Brampton
April 30 @ The Gladstone Hotel, Toronto

Five songs recorded for the new record which will definitely be called Exile On Main St. We have a house all to ourselves a few weekends from now and will be taking full advantage of it. I expect the record to be finished by the end of April. It might be a double album.

That's the news, lose yer blues.

Recorded drums yesterday for four new songs from the upcoming record which will either be called Exile On Queen St or Mercy Among The Children. I'm leaning toward the former.

Upcoming shows

I recorded a new song today with my good friend Mark from Crop Failure. We co-wrote it and both wrote our own lyrics. It's really weird and cool and I dig it. Kind of a dirge. Anyway, it'll be on the new record. I finished another separate tune for it today, so progress is being made. Incidentally, Mark plays in another band called Cessna, whom GIANTS should be doing some shows with in the coming months. I'm going to be doing a solo set opening (NOT me and an acoustic guitar, I'll be playing electric and singing along to backing tracks on my iPod...diggit) for Crop Failure @ a loft called The Animal House in Montreal February 12th. I'm excited.

Here's all the upcoming shows:

February 5 The Big City Nights Band @ The Youth Action Centre, Welland
February 12 The Big City Nights (solo set) @ The Animal House, Montreal
February 24 The Big City Nights Band @ Tiger Bar, Toronto

That's the news. Lose yer blues.

Mercy Among The Children

Disregard my last post. Ground control has deemed it necessary to leave our not famed fifth record floating in space forever, alone and remote, unless a discovered-at-the-age-of-thirty-six miracle should happen to us a la the great GBV, and people actually go digging for our older stuff. There will be no sequel to Deep Space Bistro. The next record will instead be a slight one, 13 or 14 songs, kind of a continuation of the first half of Gimme Gardens, but with a bit more thought put into it. I'll be doing most of the drums for it, as I have acquired a taste - as well as a reasonable level of competence - for that particular instrument. Another reason for this is the crippling anxiety that has let me unable to leave the city because it involves getting on a bus where inevitably a strange panic engulfs me and I feel as if I'm trying to outrun an invisible force which has somehow got ahold of my heartbeat.
The new record will be called Mercy Among The Children and it should be done by March. After that we'll make our epic Exile On Queen St up at a cottage somewhere away from the distractions of the city, namely bars and...well, just bars I guess. Lotta bars down here. Saw one the other week there on Dufferin and Eglinton called Second Beer. You don't go to a bar called Second Beer for your first drink, know what I mean?
Anyway, keep an eye out for Mercy Among The Children. Our apologies to David Adam Richards.

Sunday, January 9, 2011

Oh Sing

Work has begun on a sequel to Deep Space Bistro, which will be unimaginatively and hilariously titled Into The Bistro: Deep Space Bistro Pt II. Along with this there will be a mammoth new record sometime this year called Exile On Queen St which will be really epic.

A few shows

We got a friendly shout out here from Marc @ Gold Soundz. Thanks Marc. Plans are being hatched to begin recording the next record this February. We also have three shows coming up:

February 5 @ The Youth Action Centre, Welland
February 24 @ Tiger Bar, Toronto
March 12 @ Tracks, Brampton

My other band GIANTS is playing Marcello's tomorrow, and we'll be making an EP fairly soon. The Broken Social Network thing is dead for now.

That's the news, lose yer blues.
